24 Stunning Places That Climate Change Is Destroying For Future Generations
The Alps
The ice and snow is melting rapidly in the Alps, but this is only the beginning. Snow sports as we know them will no longer exist in the years to come. All around the world glaciers have lost more than thirty feet of ice since 1980.
An average of about 3% of glacial ice in the Alps is vanishing each year. In 2003 10% of ice was lost, and in 2006 7% was lost. If this rate continues, the ice in the Alps will disappear sometime after 2030 with the exception of the highest altitudes. In some areas of Europe, hydropower is only made possible with the ice from the Alps.
With snow decreasing everywhere, the industry that depends on snow is being threatened. The snowsports industry supports 900,000+ jobs and creates $66 billion in economic revenue. You can join Protect Our Winters to help the snowsports community act on climate.
