Bill Nye is coming to Netflix
If you’re a child of the 90’s, you probably remember Bill Nye from his show Bill Nye the Science Guy. And if you don’t remember, Bill Nye was a tv host who taught kids about the value of science through fun experiments and informative segments on scientific principles. Bill dropped out of the public eye for a little while after the show ended and turned his attention to more serious scientific pursuits.
Though recently, as scientists like Neil Degrasse Tyson have become more like pop culture figures and Bill Nye has reemerged as a voice against some of the scientific ignorance that has become unfortunately more prominent. And in that spirit, Bill Nye is coming back to TV, or at least streaming services with a new show on Netflix.
The show is called Bill Nye Saves the World and is formatted as a talk show with informative segments, kind of like a more serious version of The Daily Show. And it will focus on contentious like organic foods, vaccines, and climate change. According to Netflix, “Each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view, dispelling myths and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders or titans of industry.”
The central idea is that Bill will confront people who spread misinformation like that vaccines spread autism, or that climate change is a myth with facts. Netflix has promised that Bill’s direct style will stay on the show and he won’t be pulling any punches with the people he features on the show. Hopefully, his unfiltered take will help fight some of the false ideas that are holding back progress on these issues.
And Nye is bringing along some correspondents like model Karlie Kloss, who will star in special segments exploring the issues launched in each show.
Nye said in a press release that he is hopeful about what the show will be able to accomplish:
With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.
As to whether the show can actually save the world as the title promises, that seems a little ambitious. But some good information is always a great start.
The show premieres this spring on Netflix, giving us something informative to binge watch in the coming year.
