The World’s 15 Most Dangerous Surfing Destinations
Mavericks, California
The waves that break at this Half Moon Bay spot have often been traveling for days to reach the reef jutting out from shore, and with them comes unrivaled force and power, occasionally topping 80 feet in height. The only surfing competition here is an invitation-only event in the winter because of the skill required to surf Mavericks.
Aside from you typical dangers included on this list, Mavericks is home to ‘The Cauldron,’ which is a large hole in the bottom of the ocean that inhales water with each swell. If the waves are at their best, then The Cauldron is going to be the biggest danger you’ll face at this Northern California hotspot, holding some surfers down for multiple waves.
