A Lithuanian Adventure Should Be Next On Your Bucket List

When choosing a destination for a new European adventure, I believe it’s of the utmost importance to find authentic cultures to explore. That’s why Lithuania has become an exciting addition to my travel bucket list. The Baltic nation is a unique alternative to other places such as Germany or Poland, where tourists rule the streets throughout the year.

I’ve put together a list of the country’s best spots for site seeing, exploring, and relaxing. Check it out!

Žemaitija National Park

A luscious landscape of lakes and forests make Žemaitija National Park a place of magical fascination in the Žemaičių Highlands. Fables of ghouls, devils, and buried treasure add to the sense of mystical wonder throughout the park. Lake Plateliai is the largest body of water, notorious for it’s seven islands which once housed a gorgeous castle. Archaeologists believe it to be the Queen Bona castle based on recent findings. Visit the haunting remains via kayak or canoe if you dare!

Vilnius

As the capitol city of Lithuania, Vilnius has a few surprises up it’s sleeve. Charming cobblestoned streets and baroque churches line the streets of medieval Old Town, where a blossoming arts scene is ripe for exploring. You’ll find cheerful locals at corner cafes or perusing shops and markets. Make sure to visit the cultural epicenter Gediminas Avenue, where the Lithuanian Government resides, as well as the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, and the Martynas Mažvydas National Library.

Curonian Spit

The Curonian Spit, a sand dune 60 miles along the coast of the Baltic Sea, is a majestic, yet desolate scene of beauty on the border of Lithuania and Russia. Established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to protect it’s serene sandy beaches, many Germans (who are descendants from early settlers) choose the area for summer holidays. A favorite spot is the former artist retreat of Nida, where it’s easy to settle in for a relaxing break.

Klaipėda

A sea port on the Baltic Coast, Klaipėda has played an important role in Lithuanian history. What’s known as a traditionally ice-free port became a major player during World War II, when the Third Reich claimed the region for their own. In 1945, Klaipėda was returned to Lithuania and remains a part of the country to this day. The delightful waterfront scenes and endearing timber-frame buildings establish Klaipėda as the perfect weekend retreat.
