A popular place for squatters, campers, and wanderers from all over America, slab city is recognizable from its appearance in the 2007 film Into the Wild. The abandoned Marine base now serves as the home for around 150 year-round inhabitants, who brave the intolerable California desert heat. But in winter, Slab City comes alive, as several thousand campers head to the desolate oasis.
