Venice, Italy is without a doubt on everyone’s bucket list. From its romantic architecture to its dreamy canals, Venice draws 15-18 million tourists from all over the world each year. Lately though, during the spring and fall seasons, the streets have suffered from severe flooding. In 2012 almost 70% of Venice was damaged by the worst flooding it had witnessed in 22 years. Conditions are only predicted to get worse.

In 1900, Venice’s famous St. Mark’s square flooded about ten times a year. Today the square is flooded about one hundred times each year. The city itself is sinking at a rate of 0.08 inches annually. This, in addition to climate change causing sea levels to rise, is a recipe for disaster. Scientists predict the city will be unlivable by 2100.
