Water is my drink of choice- I drink it when I am thirsty and I drink it when I am sad, I drink it first thing in the morning and right before I go to bed. Honestly life without water would make for a much (excuse the pun) drier existence. My love for water keeps me away from the perils of fizzy drinks or caffeine loaded alternatives. But every so often I meet people who just do not seem to share my love and enthusiasm for plain old H20; like with many other things from early life, they are just plain bored of it.
Personally I feel this is a matter of taste buds, personal opinion and perspective; our bodies cannot physiologically replace water with any of the drinks that line supermarket shelves. Yet it does present a challenge for while it is essential to stay hydrated, taste buds and opinions can be a lot more stubborn than one might imagine. So how do you stay hydrated when you are bored of water?
I have come across many an article recommending low calorie drinks and even diet drinks as alternatives. I really don’t know how it is possible to ignore the perils of sugar, aspartame and caffeine that many of these are choked up on. There are much healthier and natural ways to stay hydrated and make water more interesting, and what’s even better is that they cost you next to nothing to fix up.
Yes, I am speaking of flavored water here. Ditch commercial options for simple homemade twists on good plain old water. Not only are these are great way to perk things up and make water a lot yummier, but they do so without costing your health a single cent. The possibilities are truly endless and you can translate your favorite combinations into a cool, zesty drink. The trick is to lay off the sugar and load up on flavor; here are a few ideas to get you going.
Lime and Mint is an all-time favorite, but you can take things up a notch by adding some cucumber to the classic recipe.
Combine some apple slices and ground cinnamon (or cinnamon sticks) to flavor water. Cinnamon has been shown to lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, while an apple a day keeps the doctor away!
Top up on Vitamin C and antioxidants with a delicious combination of strawberries and basil. Not only will this concoction add a spring to your step, but it will keep those wrinkles at bay too!
The sangria of flavored waters, combine blueberries, peach and lemon with a sprig of fresh mint in your carafe and voila! You have a deeply delicious and hydrating brew at your fingertips.
You don’t always have to go all out fruity with your flavors; add some jalapenos or cayenne peppers to your water to bring a spicy edge and a generous dose of capsaicin to your water. Combine with watermelon slices or peach to strike a delicate balance of flavors.
