8 Ways you’re Ruining your Healthy Salad
Using iceberg lettuce
Iceberg lettuce is crispy and crunchy, which is rare in the world of lettuces and greens. It’s also almost completely nutritionally void of anything useful: Very little vitamin A, B (B-6 & B-12), C or D, plus barely any iron or magnesium. Basically you’re chewing on water. Don’t get us wrong, water is good, but if you just eat iceberg lettuce you’re missing out on the nutritional benefits of greens.
Look toward spinach for your green of choice. It’s lower in calories and higher in almost all nutrients. It’s also higher in protein and lower in carbs than iceberg (It has 0 net carbs!). Romaine lettuce and various cabbages are also fantastic and delicious options for adding the missing texture that iceberg would otherwise provide.
